Guadalupe County is oak woodland broken by grassland, on a landscape between about 300 and 800 feet, with 28 to 40 inches of rain and a May or June peak. Upland soils are light colored, acidic sandy loam or sand. Bottomland soils run from sandy loam to clay. Cattle ranching is the land use, including bermudagrass along with native grassland. Texas Parks and Wildlife places the county in the Post Oak Savannah, not on the Edwards Plateau.

Pasture and fence lines close in with oak and other woody growth. Opening that growth, and leaving the oaks you want, is the usual scope. Ashe juniper on a rock ledge is the pattern farther west.

Deep sand and black clay

The Guadalupe County soil survey mixes those two. Patilo is a fine sand, described in pasture. Branyon is a dark clay on nearly level ground. Houston Black is a very-fine clay that shrinks and swells. Crockett loam shows up on eroded slopes. A mulcher on deep sand can rut when the ground is wet. A mulcher on Houston Black can do the same because the clay holds water and smears. Web Soil Survey shows which map unit is on a given tract once the boundary is drawn.

Floodplain, oaks, and the aquifer map

The city regulates floodplains under the National Flood Insurance Program. Development in the regulatory floodplain, including grading and fill, goes through a floodplain development permit. Maps are at the Development Services Center. The code requires that permit before work in a special flood hazard area.

Oaks here still follow Texas A&M Forest Service timing. Avoid wounding them from February through June, and paint fresh wounds immediately. Seguin is not on the county list for the San Antonio Edwards office. If a tract might sit near a regulated boundary, use the TCEQ map viewer.

What usually gets scoped

Pasture reclamation, brush clearing, fence-line clearing, and selective clearing match oak and woody growth taking back old pasture. Forestry mulching fits when the stems can be processed in place and the mulch should stay. Homesite and trail work start the same way: marks first, then a fixed quote.
